Frequently asked questions

What are the most similar-looking country flags?

The most famous near-identical pair is Chad and Romania — both vertical blue-yellow-red tricolors that differ only in the shade of blue. Indonesia and Monaco both use red-over-white horizontal bicolors, distinguished only by proportion. Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Russia share red-white-blue horizontal stripes. Ireland and Ivory Coast mirror each other (green-white-orange vs. orange-white-green).

What is the only non-rectangular national flag?

Nepal is the only country with a non-rectangular national flag. Its two stacked triangular pennants feature a crescent moon on the upper pennant and a sun on the lower one. The design dates back centuries to Hindu tradition and was formally adopted in 1962. Every other national flag in the world is rectangular.

How many national flags use the pan-African colors?

At least 9 African countries use red, gold, and green inspired by Ethiopia's flag — including Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Cameroon, Guinea, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia itself. The colors symbolize bloodshed for freedom (red), mineral wealth (gold), and land (green). Several Caribbean and Pacific flags use related palettes.

Which country's flag has an AK-47 on it?

Mozambique's flag features a Kalashnikov AK-47 rifle crossed with a hoe and an open book over a yellow star, symbolizing defense, agriculture, and education. It is the only national flag in the world currently depicting a modern firearm.

What is the world's oldest national flag?

Denmark's Dannebrog — a white cross on a red field — is the oldest continuously used national flag in the world, with origins traced to at least the 13th century. The other four Nordic flags (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland) all derive their offset-cross structure from it.

Why is the challenge gated behind continent mastery?

Because flags are where learners most often confuse similar designs — Chad and Romania, Indonesia and Monaco, the Nordic crosses. Continent-level practice disambiguates those families in context. Reaching the World Master means you've already sorted them out.

Does the challenge include subnational flags?

No — the World Master is strictly the 198 country-level flags. Regional and state flags have their own games in the Regional section.

What about countries with recent flag changes?

GeoMaster uses the current officially recognized flag for each country and updates promptly when a country adopts a new design. Historical flags appear in separate retro challenges, not in the World Master.
