Which country has more than one capital?

South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative), and Bloemfontein (judicial). Bolivia has two: Sucre (constitutional) and La Paz (seat of government). The Netherlands splits between Amsterdam (constitutional) and The Hague (government). Sri Lanka uses Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte + Colombo; Malaysia uses Kuala Lumpur + Putrajaya.

What is the smallest capital city in the world?

Vatican City is simultaneously a country and a capital, making it the smallest capital by area at 0.49 km². Ngerulmud (Palau) is often cited as the least-populated national capital with roughly 400 residents. Yaren District (Nauru's de facto capital) is another candidate at about 750 residents.

What is the newest world capital?

Indonesia is building a new capital called Nusantara in East Kalimantan (Borneo), with the phased move from Jakarta beginning in 2024. Other recently moved capitals include Myanmar → Naypyidaw (2006), Kazakhstan → Astana (1997), Nigeria → Abuja (1991), and Brazil → Brasília (1960).

What are the most commonly confused world capitals?

Six answers catch learners repeatedly: Nigeria's capital is Abuja (not Lagos). Australia's is Canberra (not Sydney or Melbourne). Canada's is Ottawa (not Toronto). Switzerland's is Bern (not Zurich or Geneva). Turkey's is Ankara (not Istanbul). Ivory Coast's is Yamoussoukro (not Abidjan). These appear in almost every geography bee.

Why can't I play the World Master capitals game right away?

It's a mastery-gated mode. You unlock it by reaching 90%+ accuracy on every continent's capitals game first. Starting here cold would be guessing — the challenge is designed as consolidation, not introduction.

Does the challenge test both directions — capital-to-country and country-to-capital?

Yes. The shuffled rounds mix both prompts, so you're not just memorizing one direction. That's deliberate: both skills matter for real geographic fluency.

What if a country has multiple capitals?

GeoMaster uses the de facto primary capital for gameplay and flags countries with multiple recognized capitals (e.g. Bolivia, South Africa, the Netherlands) in the post-game review so you learn the nuance without getting penalized on accuracy.
