Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in the world?

There are 195 internationally recognized sovereign countries: 193 member states of the United Nations plus 2 observer states (the Holy See / Vatican City and Palestine). Depending on recognition criteria, some lists extend the count to 197-206 by including Taiwan, Kosovo, and other partially recognized states.

What is the smallest country in the world?

Vatican City is the smallest sovereign country in the world at just 0.49 km² — roughly the size of about 100 football fields. Monaco is second at 2.02 km², followed by Nauru (21 km²), Tuvalu (26 km²), and San Marino (61 km²). Four of the 5 smallest sovereign countries are in Europe or Oceania.

What is the largest country in the world?

Russia is the largest country by area at 17.1 million km² — nearly twice the size of the second-largest, Canada (9.98 million km²). By population, India is the largest country at over 1.4 billion, having surpassed China in 2023. By GDP, the United States is the largest economy.

What is the newest country in the world?

South Sudan is the newest internationally recognized sovereign country, having declared independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011. The next most recent additions (depending on recognition criteria) are Kosovo (declared 2008, partially recognized) and Montenegro (2006, after Serbia and Montenegro split).

How many countries are in the United Nations?

The UN has 193 member states. Two observer states — the Holy See (Vatican City) and Palestine — participate in UN activities without voting rights. Taiwan is not a UN member; its seat was transferred to the People's Republic of China in 1971. Most geography lists still count 195-197 countries worldwide.

Do I have to unlock the challenge before I can play?

Yes — the World Master is a mastery-gated mode. You unlock it by hitting 90%+ accuracy on every continent's country game. This keeps the challenge honest: the goal is consolidated knowledge, not a cold guess across 198 countries.

Is there a time limit?

Not on your first attempt. Focus on accuracy — you're trying to clear the mastery threshold. After you've earned the badge, the leaderboard tracks completion time for players chasing records.

What happens if I miss the accuracy threshold?

Nothing punitive — you can retry immediately, or drop back to any continent to review countries you missed. The challenge tells you which regions cost you the most points so you know exactly where to practice.
